      Renew To Change - 2023
    Romans 12:2

One day I accidentally clicked on a YouTube link that was focused on Tennessee Volunteers football.
After that I was suddenly getting all these suggested clips and links about the Vols
? Do you know why that happened?
algorithms a process or set of rules to be followed in calculations or other problem-solving operations, especially by a computer.
Social media algorithms are a way of sorting posts in a users' feed based on relevancy instead of publish time. Social networks prioritize which content a user sees in their feed first by the likelihood that they'll actually want to see it.
you know our minds work in a very similar fashion?
the “links” we click on in our hearts and minds create a pattern that draws in more of the same
That determines who and what we become
Solomon: “As he thinketh in his heart, so is he.”

What is your mind focused on? Your mind maximizes and minimizes.
That’s why it’s so crucial that we focus on the right things and cast away the wrong ones.
Philippians 4:8 And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.
We started this series with “Grace to Change. “

Change comes by faith – faith that it is possible to change through the victory won by Jesus for us.

Grace to Change to Faith to Change.
This morning we move on to Renew to Change
Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
What I share with you today may seem very practical in nature – but it is also very biblical.
This won’t be a self-help class – although we have a part to play in this transformation process. Absolutely.

We sometimes hyper-spiritualize our daily Christian walk and forget the Word of God tells us again and again that there are things that we must do.
We don’t just sit there and wait.
We’re talking about renewing our minds today to facilitate the needed changes in our lives.
    Transformation
The unrenewed mind is capable of some pretty terrible things.

We talked at work the other day (several of us are in the same age bracket) about how our society has changed over the decades.
We agreed that when we were in high school, all this gun violence and school shooting were non-existent. It wasn’t even a concern. It didn’t happen./
Where I went to school, you could actually see rifles on gun racks in the trucks of high school students. Safely parked in the school parking lot. No one was concerned.
People weren’t going into schools and shooting people because that was not who they were.
If someone offered me a cigarette (or even something much worse) I would not have to think about my response. I am not a smoker. It isn’t who I am.
Nowadays people talk about gun violence without addressing the actually root cause.
When people talk about being “in the flesh” they are actually addressing a carnal mindset.
    Bad thinking produces bad behavior.
Romans 8:6 - The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.
How do we fix this situation?
Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
I stayed in bed yesterday until about 7:30 in the morning. But that didn’t mean I didn’t look at the clock about 100x before I finally got up and moving.
See, on most days, I set my clock to 5am so I am assured I respond appropriately. I have a lot to do most mornings, and I need every available moment to get it all done.
I have to set my alarm clock. We also have to set our minds.
“Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” (Col 3:2)

You see, without deliberate effort on our part, we can go astray.
Prov 29:18 – Where there is no vision, the people cast off restraint
Without Godly, biblical direction and standards, the carnal mind rises up to every decision with “why not?”
We then cast off restraint. No moral compass (like society in 2023)
“Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Out with the bad – in with the good (like breathing, right?)
Flush out the old patterns of thinking – reqrite the script

    Here is a roadmap:
    1. Prayer (Eph 4:6) Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart.
you pray to change - but do you prepare to change?
    2. Preparation - “Set your mind” (housecleaning) (packing for the gym) “To have an extraordinary life, you have to define it” Isaiah 50:7: Because the Sovereign LORD helps me, I will not be disgraced. Therefore, I have set my face like a stone, determined to do his will. And I know that I will not be put to shame.
    3. Practice (repetition) Joshua 1:8: Never stop reciting these teachings. You must think about them night and day so that you will faithfully do everything written in them. Only then will you prosper and succeed.
Preaching on Love 3 weeks in a row
We often wish we could have started sooner – we feel the pain of regret for time we feel we’ve lost over the years. “Woulda, Coulda,Shoulda”
“The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
“Forgetting those things which are behind me” “Drive On”

Romans 12:2: Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

Renewed minds can turn this world around though the power of our God at work in and through us.
A renewed mind processes the world – and every opportunity – quite differently.
"Victims recite problems, leaders provide solutions."

Our we fixing our thoughts – are we setting our minds – on the problems – or on the ONE solution?
How Big is your challenge? How Big is your GOD?
Despite the world situation, we must keep moving forward
    ? Are we focusing on
    • the sickness – or the healer
    • the debt or the provider
    • the sin or the savior

Today, adjust your focus. Keep your mind on Almighty God. Minimize distractions.
“People fail because of broken focus”
You’ll be surprised when you see the power of a focused mind!

Is your mind consistently wandering without a purpose or dwelling in thoughts that are unhealthy?
If you shift your focus, you shift your life

Prov 4:23: More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.
