      Pathways of Mercy

Psalm 41:1-3: God always blesses those who are kind to the poor and helpless. They’re the first ones God helps when they find themselves in any trouble.
The Lord will preserve and protect them. They’ll be honored and esteemed while their enemies are defeated. When they are sick, lying upon their bed of suffering, God will restore them. He will raise them up again and restore them back to health.
(page 921)

Heb 13:2: Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.
(page 1956)

Matthew 5:7: How blessed you are when you demonstrate tender mercy! For tender mercy will be demonstrated to you.
(page 1563)
Matthew 25:34-36: Then the King will turn to those on his right and say, ‘You have a special place in my Father’s heart. Come and experience the full inheritance of the kingdom realm that has been destined for you from before the foundation of the world! For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. When you found me thirsty, you gave me drink. When I had no place to stay, you invited me in, and when I was poorly clothed, you covered me. When I was sick, you tenderly cared for me, and when I was in prison you visited me.’
(page 1607)

    Pathways of Mercy

    Psalm 41:1-3

a famous writer: “We teach best what we most need to learn.”
(this is the sermon I need to hear)

Those people at the edge of the exit ramp. (we’re used to it now…)

I remember the first time I saw a sign that said “Will work for Food”

We never really know who is “for real” do we?

Heb 13:2: Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it.

This verse encourages believers to be hospitable and kind to others, as they might be unknowingly entertaining divine messengers.

We are to be channels for God’s Divine Mercy
“restoring human dignity” “Mercy is rehumanizing”

Our choices help to shape our lives – and people do make bad decisions – (and although that’s true) we aren’t called to judge them for that.
We here to lift them out of their pit.

Matt 5:7: How blessed you are when you demonstrate tender mercy! For tender mercy will be demonstrated to you.

We are to be Channels of God’s Mercy.

Just like God showed US His Mercy – the grace and mercy we did not deserve.

“We pray “forgive us our trespasses…”

We have to allow God’s grace to flow to others, too.

“The mandate of Divine Mercy is to continually expand our definition of “neighbor”
until no one stands outside the circle of compassion.”
God blesses those who are kind to the poor. He helps them out of their troubles.
Although you may feel less than successful in being this kind of giving and forgiving Christian, God’s strength and power are ready to fill that gap.
    “ …my weakness becomes a portal to God’s power.”

This message is not meant to condemn – maybe it is not even meant to convict.
Maybe it is really to correct. To correct our course and our priorities.
    Starting with me.

“…those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and… the gift of righteousness (will) reign in life…”

To fully experience God’s grace we have to be willing to show it as well.

Matthew Kelly: “Do you have a relationship with the poor? If we want to have a personal relationship with God, a personal relationship with the poor is vital.”

God always blesses those who are kind to the poor and helpless.

“Do something today that your future self will thank you for.”

James 4:10: Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.

    The Heart of GOD

    GOD’s Heart

    “…working in and through you…”

    We help by giving alms…

…but we also help by lifting up heads – pointing others to the truth we have received.
Andrew Carnegie didn’t just make donations – he deliberately found ways to get life-changing information to people to lift them out of their poverty.

    “Give a man a fish…”

A smart investor knows it is important where they invest their hard-earned resources.

We know that when we give to a ministry (such as Hillside) that preaches the gospel, that continues to direct people to the Cross – to Jesus – that it is fertile soil for the Kingdom of God.

That means your seed you plant will produce an abundant crop. A good harvest

…but what about when you give to that person on the street corner?

Prov 19:17: Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed.

Matt 25:40: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

unto the least of these… you have done it unto ME

So we’re giving and serving Jesus when we do this
(how could there possibly be a better investment?)

Just like everything else – we must do it in faith

“Lord Jesus, I trust in You”

    Matt 25:34-36 (read)

“We are offering hope, dignity, mercy and love.”
Mother Teresa (1979 Nobel Prize): “Sometime ago, this to you will sound very strange, but I brought a girl child from the street, and I could see in the face of the child that the child was hungry. God knows how many days that she had not eaten. So I give her a piece of bread. And then the little one started eating the bread crumb by crumb. And I said to the child, eat the bread, eat the bread.
And she looked at me and said: I am afraid to eat the bread because I’m afraid when it is finished I will be hungry again.
This is a reality, and yet there is a greatness of the poor.
One evening a gentleman came to our house and said, ‘There is a Hindu family and the eight children have not eaten for a long time. Do something for them.’
And I took rice and I went immediately, and there was this mother, those little ones’ faces, shining eyes from sheer hunger. She took the rice from my hand, she divided into two and she went out. When she came back, I asked her, ‘Where did you go? What did you do?’
And one answer she gave me: ‘They are hungry also.’
She knew that the next door neighbor, a Muslim family, was hungry.
What surprised me most, not that she gave the rice, but what surprised me most, that in her suffering, in her hunger, she knew that somebody else was hungry, and she had the courage to share, share the love. And this is what I mean, I want you to love the poor, and never turn your back to the poor, for in turning your back to the poor, you are turning it to Christ.”

    “Prime the Pump”

even a little bit at the start will open up the channels for God to use you in even greater ways.

“Then the King will turn to those on his right and say, ‘You have a special place in my Father’s heart. Come and experience the full inheritance of the kingdom realm that has been destined for you from before the foundation of the world. of the world! For when you saw me hungry, you fed me. “

Matt 25:40: ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
