    The Bread is Broken 2024
    Luke 24:35

Our lives are shaped by moments of awareness and revelation.
When I was 8 years old I took that eternity-changing walk down the aisle and gave my heart and life to Jesus Christ in front of a revival congregation at Eastwood Baptist church.
I remember a day or two later our pastor came by the hose and talked with me to make sure I understood what I had done.
Faith comes by hearing, and that true believing comes through a revelation of the Holy Spirit to us.
In my young adult life I can remember, after about a year of karate classes, my sensei spoke to a small group of us who had all being training about the same length of time:
“Only now are you starting to understand some of things you have been taught. You are now seeing the purpose behind things we have been practicing”
Sometimes we can see without really comprehending what we are seeing.
Jesus told His disciples (in Mark 4) “The privilege of intimately knowing the mystery of God’s kingdom realm has been granted to you, but not to the others, where everything is revealed in parables.
“For even when they see what I do, they will not understand, and when they hear what I say, they will learn nothing, otherwise they would repent and be forgiven.”
“‘they may be ever seeing but never perceiving, and ever hearing but never understanding; otherwise they might turn and be forgiven!’”

We cannot perceive what the heart cannot receive.

John 13:7: Jesus replied, “You don’t understand now what I am doing, but someday you will.”
Sometimes we can see without really comprehending what we are seeing.
Mark 4:20 - “But the seed sown on good soil represents those who open their hearts to receive the Word and their lives bear good fruit—some yield a harvest of thirty, sixty, even one hundred times more than was sown!”

“Open my eyes, that I may see, glimpses of truth thou hast for me”

“Then the two from Emmaus told their story of how Jesus had appeared to them as they were walking along the road, and how they had recognized him as he was breaking the bread.”

The revelation of Who Jesus really is changes our lives forever.

After the resurrection of Jesus, Luke 24 tells of two men walking to Emmaus.

They were followers – they were true believers. Their hearts were crushed.

They were discussing everything that had taken place over the last few days.

The scriptures tells us that Jesus came upon them and walked along with them

…but they did not recognize Who He was!

Jesus asked them (in vs 17,)
“What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?”

“You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”
    “What things?” Jesus asked.
“The things that happened to Jesus, the man from Nazareth,” they said. “He was a prophet who did powerful miracles, and he was a mighty teacher in the eyes of God and all the people. But our leading priests and other religious leaders handed him over to be condemned to death, and they crucified him. We had hoped he was the Messiah who had come to rescue Israel. This all happened three days ago.”
“Then some women from our group of his followers were at his tomb early this morning, and they came back with an amazing report. They said his body was missing, and they had seen angels who told them Jesus is alive! Some of our men ran out to see, and sure enough, his body was gone, just as the women had said.”
Then Jesus said to them, “You foolish people! You find it so hard to believe all that the prophets wrote in the Scriptures. Wasn’t it clearly predicted that the Messiah would have to suffer all these things before entering his glory?”
Then Jesus took them through the writings of Moses and all the prophets, explaining from all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey. Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they begged him, “Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.” So he went home with them.
As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them. Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. And at that moment he disappeared!
They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?”
“They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together and saying, “It is true! The Lord has risen and has appeared to Simon.” Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.”
    (elaborate – with bread)
The revelation of Who Jesus really is changes our lives forever.
On this Resurrection Sunday, we celebrate the breaking of the bread, along with the cup of our redemption.
The word Eucharist literally means “act of thanksgiving.”
To celebrate Holy Communion has everything to do with recognition, acknowledgement and gratitude for all Christ has done for us.
These two who were walking to Emmaus were carrying heavy burdens.
    Broken hearts.

When Jesus shared with them how all that had happened was necessary to fulfill His purpose of redemption, their hearts burned inside them.
    That burning was HOPE.
Hope that maybe all was not lost. Hope that there was still a future and a promise

Do YOU need that HOPE today?
When Jesus broke the bread in front of them, the revelation of Christ was then experienced by them.
He truly was the sacrifice - and the mission was accomplished.

“It is finished” – the price had been paid.

The Revelation of Christ does not come through our intellect.

“You will seek Me and your will find Me”

It is a knowing – by faith – in your heart -- that He loved you enough to take your place. To pay your price.

To give His life as a ransom for many (including YOU)

Mark 10:45 – “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

When you know this, then the gospel is unveiled and revealed to you.

Your eyes are opened to the truth.

1 Cor 1:18 - For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

In the Eucharist, we look to Jesus – and give thanks.

In the liturgical communion service, after prayers of repentance, we proclaim,

“Hear the good news: Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that is proof of God’s love toward us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!”

“As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it. Then he broke it and gave it to them.
31 Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him.”

The revelation of Who Jesus really is changes our lives forever.
