       Make Me Whole

Matt 8:1-3: When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.
(pg 1569)

Matthew 14:36: And as many as touched were made perfectly whole
(page 1584)

Matt 7:1,2: “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.”
(page 15672)

Heb 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.
(page 1957)

Matthew 28:20 – “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
(page 1616)

    Make Me Whole
    Matthew 8:1-3

“Man… sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
    And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

This is a good description of a life that is out of balance.

Mr. Miyagi taught that life must be in balance.
“Lesson not just karate only. Lesson for whole life.
Whole life have a balance, everything be better.”

“Three things in life – your health, your mission, and the people you love.
    That’s it.”

Holistic medicine (whole) addresses the whole man.
Chinese medicine focuses on bringing the body back into balance.

Thoreau: “There is one consolation in being sick; and that is the possibility that you may recover to a better state than you were ever in before.”

Sometimes we get a wake-up call, and if we are wise – we make the better choices that put us back on the right path

Being out of balance can become a downward spiral that is hard to escape.
    1. We admitted we were powerless over ____—that our lives had become unmanageable.
    2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
    3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God
We need a savior. Our savior has come. Immanuel. God with us.

Matthew 14:36: And as many as touched were made perfectly whole

    Jesus came to heal us.
Not just to heal our physical bodies –
    - but to heal our broken hearts and to heal us of our shame.
Matthew 8: “ … a leper appeared and went to his knees before Jesus, praying, “Master, if you want to, you can heal my body.”
Jesus reached out and touched him, saying, “I want to. Be clean.”
Then and there, all signs of the leprosy were gone.” (MSG)
This wonderful miracle is very similar to the healing of the woman with the issue of blood, and how she pushed her way through an unwelcoming crowd to get to Jesus.
Both of these people were desperately in need of healing.
No other options were left. They had to find Jesus.
Like before, because of their health and social restrictions, the best they had going for them up to this point was that they had heard about Jesus.
    • The woman’s situation
    • The leper’s situation
The leper could not legally get anywhere near Jesus. (not even close)

Somehow he got in close to where Jesus was. No doubt he was coming from a hiding place. Had he been seen, being unclean because of his leprosy, people repulsed by his condition would have thrown rocks at him to keep him far away from Jesus.

Not only is this man suffering from his disease, he is dying inside from the shame and rejection that came because of his infirmities.
He has been isolated – cut-off from even his closest family – and labelled “unclean”
(his life was the exact opposite of whole. It was totally broken)
Mother Teresa: “The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted.”

In his total sense of hopelessness and despair, he risked all – he risked even greater rejection and ridicule – to seek help from the only one who could save him from his fate.
“Lord,” the man said, “if you are willing, you can heal me and make me clean.”
Imagine those milliseconds of awkward fear as he waited for a response from Jesus. ( )
The eyes of everyone around him – looking at him in ridicule. ( )

“How dare you trouble the Master! Don’t you know you are breaking the Levitical law just by being here? Have you no fear of God?”
Lev 13:45,46: “Suppose someone has a skin disease that makes them ‘unclean.’ Then they must wear torn clothes. They must let their hair hang loose. They must cover the lower part of their face. They must cry out, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ 46 As long as they have the disease, they remain ‘unclean.’ They must live alone. They must live outside the camp.”

But verse three of today’s scripture tells us of the love of Jesus instead:
“Jesus reached out and touched him. “I am willing,” he said. “Be healed!” And instantly the leprosy disappeared. “
In that moment, the Lord didn’t just restore the man’s health – he also restored his humanity. The leprosy was gone – and so was the separation – the rejection – and the shame.
Jesus: Matt 7:1,2) “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. For you will be treated as you treat others. The standard you use in judging is the standard by which you will be judged.”
    “No More Judging”

Under the law, when the clean touches the unclean, the clean becomes unclean.
Under grace, when the clean (Jesus) touches the unclean, the unclean become clean.
This is the Love of God. This is the Compassion of Christ.

This is what He offers you and me today, too.

    Jesus came to heal us.
Not just to heal our physical bodies –
    - but to heal our broken hearts and to heal us of our shame.
1 Cor 1:18: For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

TPT “To preach the message of the cross seems like sheer nonsense to those who are on their way to destruction, but to us who are being saved, it is the mighty power of God released within us. “

The Orthodox definition of salvation is also healing. Restoration.

James 5:16: Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Confess your faults... that you may be healed

Sounds like forgiveness. Sounds like restoration.

restoration: a return of something to a former, original, normal, or unimpaired condition. restitution of something taken away or lost.

We do not doubt God has the power to heal.

What we may struggle with is if He is willing to heal us.

Healing is through God’s grace toward us.

It isn’t earned through our good works.

It is available because of the sacrifice of Jesus.

Heb 13:8: Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever.

    “ …always the same—yesterday, today, and forever.

Matthew 28:20 – “ …be sure of this: I Am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
