    Communion 2023
    1 Cor 10:16

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth: I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.
    - 1 Cor 11:2

What do you think about traditions?

One day after school a young girl noticed that her mom was cutting off the ends of a pot roast before putting it in the oven to cook for dinner…
“…when I was first married we had a very small oven, and the pot roast didn't fit in the oven unless I cut the ends off.”

How about traditions in our Methodist churches?

    How about Sunday School?

The Sunday school movement began in Britain in the 1780s. The Industrial Revolution had resulted in many children spending all week long working in factories. Christian philanthropists wanted to free these children from a life of illiteracy.
Sunday schools were originally literally schools: they were places were poor children could learn to read.

    Communion once a month
Wesley: “The Duty of Constant Communion”
“I am to show that it is the duty of every Christian to receive the Lord's Supper as often as he can.”

The First reason why it is the duty of every Christian so to do is, because it is a plain command of Christ.
A Second reason why every Christian should do this as often as he can, is, because the benefits of doing it are so great to all that do it in obedience to Him

The Full Gospel Message is too powerful to fully process if we only use our carnal (natural) minds to do so.
Just like the struggles these disciples had, even now some people will walk away if you preach the whole gospel – and include all that Jesus said.
It’s hard to overcome years and years of a watered-down message.
It’s more comfortable to put God is a box – and let Him be, as they say, “the god of our understanding.”
But GOD is much bigger than that.

1 Cor 15:51: Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed…

Is your heart open to accept that there are some things we can only now know in part – but one day fully understand?

Our New Covenant = Good Things

My purpose for this message today is that you would, by hearing and believing, be able to receive from God, by His Grace, all that He offers you through the Table of the Lord this day.

1 Cor 13:12 (Paul) For now we see through a glass darkly: but then shall we see face to face. Now I know in part: but then shall I know even as I am known.

In the same way, we have humble ourselves through teachable, child-like faith to renew our minds to the true Word of God – the Living Word.
The Word that was made flesh and dwelt among us.

The “safe” word is not the Word that will transform our lives and give us
victory over the powers of darkness.

Are you willing to take the constraints and restraints off of what the Bible teaches regarding Holy Communion so we can allow God to fully work in our lives and empower us to live in His will – His highest will – for our lives as New Testament people?

Irenaeus described our Eucharistic celebration as “the hope of the resurrection”

Sometimes God’s Word is not received well. We might hear things that we do not want to hear and so God’s word makes us uneasy.
“the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God”.

Not everyone who heard Jesus teachings would be touched and transformed. Some walked away unchanged.

    - Is the Truth too hard to bear?
The TRUTH is – Heb 9:22 – “… the law requires that nearly everything be cleansed with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.”
Our sinful state kept us separated from God. It is a hard thing to comprehend, but still true.
Jesus said: “I live because of the living Father who sent me; in the same way, anyone who feeds on me will live because of me. I Am the true bread that came down from heaven.”

Earlier on in the chapter when Jesus suggested that He was the bread of life, they began to murmur and complain. Matters had now gotten worse when Jesus said “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you”.
Their murmuring has now gradually escalated into quarreling among themselves.
They are confused and angry at what they have heard.

To the Jews, Jesus is a stumbling block; but to those who believe, the broken body and shed blood of Jesus is the only means of salvation.

John 1:14 tells us that the “word” became flesh and dwelt among us.

His Words are life to our flesh.
“He has given us everything we need…”

In Leviticus we read “For I am the LORD your God: you shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and you shall be holy; for I Am holy...”
How could we possibly do this without the completed work of the cross?

We all struggle – and we ALL need a savior.

We all really do! That’s the Power of a Testimony of God’s Grace.
“Wow – I never realized other people had the same struggles I did.”

Eucharist: the sacrament of Holy Communion; the Lord's Supper.
    eucharísti: a gratefulness, thanksgiving

    Today we celebrate Holy Communion.
We receive by faith the sacrifice of Christ’s body and blood.
He said to always do this – in remembrance of what He did for us.

I have to remind myself often – especially when I stumble.
I have to be reminded of His grace and His mercy.

Draw your own conclusions: When we drink the cup of blessing, aren’t we taking into ourselves the blood, the very life, of Christ? And isn’t it the same with the loaf of bread we break and eat? Don’t we take into ourselves the body, the very life, of Christ?

What do you need from God today?
What is the broken part of you that needs mending?

Everyone knows “about” God… but can you honestly tell me you know Him – personally?
Do you have a personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe?

Have you been set free from your past – and freed to walk in all of His blessings today?
Do you need healing in your body today? Do you need healing in your soul?

In John 17:4, Jesus says, "I have brought you glory on earth by finishing the work you gave me to do."

He also said (from the cross) “It is finished.”

It is finished. There is nothing left to do.
We have been redeemed (if we will accept our redemption.)

    Today we celebrate Holy Communion.
We remember the sacrifice of Christ’s body and blood.

He said to always do this – in remembrance of what He did for us.

1 Cor 10: 15,16: “You are reasonable people. Decide for yourselves if what I am saying is true. When we bless the cup at the Lord’s Table, aren’t we sharing in the blood of Christ? And when we break the bread, aren’t we sharing in the body of Christ?”

When you and I then partake in faith, we are not just eating bread and drinking juice or wine but rather we are taking into ourselves or receiving into ourselves what this scripture refers to as “the benefits of the body and blood of Jesus.”

    (what are the “benefits?”)

1 Cor 11:26 - For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.
Declare – Proclaim – Decree Binding & Loosing. Life & Death.

"You will also decree a thing, and it will be established for you; And light will shine on your ways.”

With the heart man believes and with the mouth man confesses

Jesus paid it all. He is Risen

He made all things possible for you and me. Today. In this moment.

He’s the God we put our trust in. His grace allows us to rest in Him.

Today, as we gather around the Table of Grace set before us, let us rest in His completed work.

    “Out of my bondage, sorrow and night, Jesus, I come, Jesus, I come;
    Into Thy freedom, gladness and light, Jesus, I come to Thee;
Out of my sickness into Thy health, Out of my want and into Thy wealth,
Out of my sin and into Thyself, Jesus, I come to Thee.”
(“Jesus, I Come” by William T. Sleeper, 1819-1904).

The Table of the Lord is open to all of us today.

I am the resurrection and the life.
The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this? –Jesus
    ~ John 11:25-26

Paul wrote to the church in Corinth: I praise you for remembering me in everything and for holding to the traditions just as I passed them on to you.
    - 1 Cor 11:2

vs 23: For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”
