     The Goodness of GOD
    Psalm 27:13-14

We are a church made up of unique individuals. We find a lot of our strength in that, as this allows us to bring a lot of different talents and abilities together as the body of Christ.
One thing we have a lot of commonality in is our enthusiasm (that is a nice word for it) for college football.
…and part of that commonality is that all of us have had times when our team lost an important game. A heartbreaker.
…and, we have also known seasons where our team surprised us and won a game that we thought we would not win. A surprise, indeed!
“God is going to surprise you.”
Today’s scripture reflects a hope of being surprised, even in a time of struggle:
“I remain confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Our mission – our purpose – our desire here at this church, is to be a resource for you to find help and hope and healing (restoration) for your lives.
We also know that, in order to accomplish that, we have to turn our hearts to our Creator – our God.

Sometimes it takes a while for that message to heard and properly received in our hearts.
I recently bought a new small-sized skillet from Ollie’s. It is amazing. The eggs just slide off the frying pan and onto the plate. I had previously used the same non-stick skillet for years – but gradually that protective coating had worn off and the eggs began to stick.
People sometimes have a Teflon heart and just like the seed on the wrong soil, the gospel truth can’t penetrate and stick. The message of The Goodness of God - Good Things - sometimes gets lost on those who have had too many years of shaming and condemnation. Disappointment. Dis-couragement.
But as we continue to let the Word work in us, plow up the soil, the message can begin to take root – to stick. That is how transformation can occur.
We starts to look at everything with new eyes.
I know that I will live to see the LORD's goodness in this present life.
We know life is full of challenges, and we recognize that sometimes that answers we seek are not easily found – without proper guidance.
So many times we find that what people call “religion” doesn’t really show us the path of life. People will tell you all kinds of untrue things about God.
It is important that we find our answers in His Word – the Bible.
There are so many who would tell you God is angry with you – and that He is going to punish you for your mistakes. But we have a savior whose name is Jesus.
Jesus shows us the heart of God toward us.
1 John 4:15,16 - If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.

That third sentence in this scripture says it all: “God is Love.”
? How do we know what God is like? We look at Jesus.
Jesus said in John 14:9 - “Have I been with you all this time and you do not know Me yet? Whoever has seen Me, has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

“Whoever has seen Me, has seen the Father.

If we want to understand God, we need to look to Jesus.

What did He say? More importantly, what did He do?

He made the blind to see and the deaf to hear. He fed the people who were hungry.

    • He loved. He healed. He restored broken lives.
    • He told us it was wrong for us to judge any other person.
    • He taught that we should love and forgive each other.

It is easy to point our finger at someone else and talk about what they have done wrong – but we still know in our hearts that we have done wrong as well.

    Jesus: Blessed are the merciful.

James 2:13 - There will be no mercy for those who have not shown mercy to others. But if you have been merciful, God will be merciful when he judges you.

    “Mercy triumphs over judgment.”

Our wrong deeds – our sins – have kept us far from God.

But Jesus came to bring us back to God.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Jesus told us He came that we might have LIFE

He went about doing good and healing all

Despite all the wonderful things Jesus did for people, the people of that time still cursed Him, rejected Him, and finally had Him executed on a cruel cross

The Cross is the plan of God from before the foundation of the world to bring reconciliation - making peace in all things and redeeming humanity from being lost and remaining in the grip of the enemy, and their sinfulness, by casting down, through the power and the victory of the cross, the principalities and powers that enslave and oppress them

2 Cor 10:5 - We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

We did nothing to deserve it, but God made a way for us to be forgiven – to be cleansed and restored back to Him.

It was God’s plan – it was all designed and orchestrated by God.

Jesus said (John 10:18) “No one takes my life from me. I give my life of my own free will. I have the authority to give my life, and I have the authority to take my life back again. This is what my Father ordered me to do.”
The followers who heard those words that day were likely very confused.
Calvary was yet in the distance; Jesus was yet to die, but He foretold coming events. He would soon give His life a ransom for the sins of humanity.
He would soon offer Himself as the atonement for sin. His life was not taken from Him. He willingly laid it down. He possessed power over life and power over death.
We should rejoice in these words.
Had there been no death there would be no life.
Had Christ not offered Himself we would yet be condemned in sin.
As He died on the cross and declared the work finished, He secured our salvation!
We have the assurance of salvation through the finished work of Christ on the cross.
Our hope and assurance comes through Christ and Christ alone!

No matter where we are in our personal situations, the Message of the Cross still has the power to change our lives.

The Gospel Message has the power to stir our hearts to Hope again.
    1. Hope for another chance
Hope for a new day to dawn
Hope even when there seems to be no hope

Today’s Scripture: Yet I believe with all my heart that I will see again your goodness, Yahweh, in the land of life eternal! Here’s what I’ve learned through it all: Don’t give up; don’t be impatient; be entwined as one with the Lord. Be brave and courageous, and never lose hope. Yes, keep on waiting—for he will never disappoint you!

Our Message is the Goodness of God. Good Things. Goodness and Mercy

We see what we are looking for. (motorcycle lessons)

    “Seek and ye shall find”

“I would have despaired had I not believed that I would see the goodness of the LORD In the land of the living.”

Romans 2:4 tell us the goodness of God is intended to lead us to repentance.

It is by His love and His mercy He gives us another chance to receive His love and forgiveness. Only Jesus can make our lives whole again.

We hear His voice – but do we answer Him?

Jesus says He stands at the door of our hearts and knocks.

It all goes back to love – God’s love.

John 3:16 - For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

God made a way for us to not only escape the punishment we deserve – but He also offers us eternal life through Jesus Christ His only Son.

The wonderful truth is that He offers it to us today.
