Michah 7:7-8: But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.

Psalm 73:21-28: When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered,
I was senseless and ignorant; I was a brute beast before you.
Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.
You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.
My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you. But as for me, it is good to be near God. I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

GOD is the Strength of My Heart
    Psalm 73:23-28

God is the strength of my heart and all I need forever.

    “Don’t forget to breathe”

    “I need a vacation”

We feel exhausted because we perceive ourselves to be less than up to the challenges we have on a daily basis.”

Even at our best, our strength and energy are finite resources…

“but those who wait upon the Lord…”

He is the Vine – we are the branches

The only truly renewable resource is God

“The just shall live by faith”

If we are living in faith, we are trusting in God – and in His Word

We believe – we have faith – that what He said is true

    That “His grace is sufficient”

That we can do “all things through Christ”

Michah 7:7-8: But as for me, I watch in hope for the LORD, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. Do not gloat over me, my enemy! Though I have fallen, I will rise. Though I sit in darkness, the LORD will be my light.

“This problem didn’t come to stay; it came to pass. God being for me is more than the world being against me. I will arise.”

Rev 1:18 – “I Am the living one. I died, but look--I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.”

Are you believing – are you trusting – are you resting in your redemption?
    Let’s break down today’s scripture:
    When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered, I was senseless and ignorant;
I was a brute beast before you.

Ever have “one of those days?”
When we are stressed, (“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered”) we don’t always behave well.

We’re not always kind. We’re not always patient. We may even lash out.

“When my heart was grieved and my spirit embittered” can be anything from a small disappointment to a soul-crushing loss of some kind. A wound that goes so deep it feel like nothing will ever be the same again.

“Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand.”

David’s saying, “Although I really acted out – although I conducted myself like a “brute beast” – I didn’t let go of the hand of my heavenly Father God.”

You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory.
NLT – “You guide me with your counsel, leading me to a glorious destiny.”

David recognizes that God has begun a good work in him and will be faithful to complete what He has started.

Phil 1:6: I am sure that the good work God began in you will continue until he completes it on the day when Jesus Christ comes again.

We have to trust in our God. Our Vine. Our source.
It is God working in and through us that delivers us into our destiny.

Not our strength. Not our willpower.

So we stop looking at the external world for our answers.
    The external things are temporary.

Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.

“My flesh and my heart may fail”
So, yeah, David admits there are times when he behaves badly…
…when maybe he seems to lose courage.
The time of this writing is obviously one of those times.

My flesh and my heart may fail (this is our human strength)

“There are two types of tired, I suppose.
One is the dire need of rest and the other is the dire need of peace.”

but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

“but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”

“Maybe my mind and body will become weak, but God is my source of strength. He is mine forever!”

How many times in the scriptures do we see “but God”

    He is sovereign.
He has the last word – in our world – even in 2022 – and even over our lives

David then recognizes there are those who do not have a better day ahead…

Those who are far from you will perish; you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.

But as for me, it is good to be near God.
I have made the Sovereign LORD my refuge; I will tell of all your deeds.

These verses show how we need to handle our own ups and downs.

People say, “under the circumstances” – but we should never be “under the circumstances”

    We must be single-minded.

It is impossible to enter God’s rest with a divided heart

James 1:8: A double-minded person is unstable in all their ways

Here’s what our heart should be speaking:
(three words to empower your professions of faith)

“I have set my face” “My heart is fixed” “As for me and my house”
“I delight to do Your will”
These are the confessions of a single-minded heart

“out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks”

Hebrews 10:23: Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
    “Without wavering”

David writes in Psalms 26:1: I have trusted in the LORD without wavering.

What does it mean to trust in the Lord? The word trust means to have a firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.

    David was saying:
    • God, I believe that you are reliable
    • God, I believe in what you say
    • God, I believe in your ability
    • God, I believe in your strength that you can do what you have said

David said he trusted without wavering. To waver is much like the waves of the sea. They go up and down, in and out. (ask with no doubting)

We have to have a consistent walk with God; we can’t be up one day saying “Oh Lord, I love you”, and the next day be down - so low - that we’re wondering if He is even real!

Paul said, “I want to know Him. I want to have the same power in my life that raised Jesus from the dead.” (Phil 3:10)

Wesley : “Christ dwelling and reigning in you, The hope of glory - The ground of your hope.”

Isaiah 40:29: He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.

“but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever”
