     HOMECOMING 回家

Luke 21:19 - “By standing firm you will gain life.”

1 Corinthians 1:26–27: For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.
(page 1848)

Romans 10:17 - So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
(page 1836)

Luke 19:5,6 – When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.
(page 1700)

Luke 19:9,10: Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
(page 1700)

    Hillside Homecoming - 2022

    1 Corinthians 1:26 - 31

The Hillside Family - you are ALL a part of it today.

Hillside has a rich and colorful history. I have been blessed to learn much about it - and have been involved in it for the past twenty years.

Early on, we created a vision statement…

    Our Vision
Hillside United Methodist Church is a place of refuge from the storms of life -
a sanctuary where people can find hope, love and healing in their lives.

Hillside is a church with a mission -
a mission to bring restoration to the community
by first experiencing God's restoration among its membership.
By God's hand we experience His power of

Restoration in our Faith, Restoration in our Relationships,
Restoration in our Bodies, Restoration in our Minds,
Restoration in our Finances, Restoration in our Vision

as God reveals His Will and Power through His written Word
and through our openhearted pursuit of His presence in our daily lives.

Our members operate as anointed ministers of God's power, and our church becomes recognized as The House of God, wherein those hungry for more of God may find help and regain purpose for their lives.

With God as our Strength and Power (II Samuel 22:33) we shall see this Vision come to pass before our eyes.

"Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it.
For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie; though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry."
    - Habakkuk 2:2,3

"So long as there is breath in me, that long will I persist For now I know one of the greatest principles of success; if I persist long enough I will win... I will persist. I will win." --Og Mandino

It’s interesting how our timing and God’s timing don’t always match…
and yet, if we trust God and His timing, we always win.

Jesus said, “…the one who endures to the end will be saved.”

I believe God is building Hillside at the speed of LIFE.

It’s God’s process - working in and through us -
    - building us from the inside out (ward.)

When you build upon the ROCK, it takes longer - but it is a firm foundation that will withstand any storm.

Luke 21:19 - “By standing firm you will gain life.”

When you build upon the rock, you do so by recognizing your total dependence on Jesus Christ.

Hillsiders will tell you we are totally and completely dependent on Him.
…and He has never let us down.

He depend on His strength and His grace. We show grace to others because He has shown us grace.

For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty. ~ 1 Corinthians 1:26–27

God’s ways are often opposite from the world’s ways.

According to 1 Corinthians 1:26, “not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called.”

Isn’t it fascinating to discover that while the world looks favorably upon the wise, mighty and noble, God does not?

Let’s see in the next verse what God chooses instead: “God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty.”
Remember, dear brothers and sisters, that few of you were wise in the world’s eyes or powerful or wealthy when God called you.

Isn’t it amazing? God has chosen the foolish and weak things to qualify for His abundant blessings. But the verse does not say that the foolish and weak things will remain foolish and weak.
In His hands of grace, the foolish and weak things become even wiser and mightier than the wise and mighty things of the world.

“We have this treasure in earthen vessels…”

    Luke 19:1-10 (read)

“Zacchaeus was a wee little man…”

I’ve lived my whole life as “less than tall.” That probably won’t ever change J

I know what it is like to get swallowed up by the crowd and a concert and wonder if I’ll come out of it alive

On that day Jesus entered Jericho, Zacchaeus had fully blended into the crowed.

Tax collector’s were not popular people. He was lucky to not get clobbered by the mobs of people

He discreetly climbed up on the sycamore tree, and it seemed like no one was noticing him…
    …except when Jesus passed by

We are familiar with the story… (elaborate)

Notice two things about the wee man up in the tree…

    • Despite the “press of the crowd,” Jesus noticed him
    • Jesus called him out by name

You and I may sometimes feel far away from God, but just like Zacchaeus,
Jesus knows exactly where we are – and He hears the cry of our hearts today.

    He knows us by name.

vs 9,10: Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
NLV: “For the Son of Man came to look for and to save from the punishment of sin those who are lost.”

On that day, Jesus went home with Zacchaeus.
“Today salvation has come to this house”

Today, Jesus speaks to our hearts and says, “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.”

When I used to drive Hayley home from college for a visit, I used to always say, “Home, sweet home” when we pulled in the drive way.

I wanted to emphasize to her that this would always be her home – her refuge – no matter how far her travels might take her.

We all need a base. A refuge. A secret, safe place of rest.

2,000 years ago, Zacchaeus had a “homecoming”

Today, our humble little church that God uses according to His plans and purposes, is celebrating a Homecoming.

Maybe as you reflect on the love and mercy of our savior Jesus Christ, there is a homecoming happening in your heart?

No matter how far we go, He never leaves us nor forsakes us.

We can’t hide in the sycamore tree. Jesus knows where we are.

Psalm 46:1 - God is our safe place and our strength. He is always our help when we are in trouble.

“God is our shelter and our strength. When troubles seem near, God is nearer, and He’s ready to help. So why run and hide?”

Jesus “came to seek and to save the lost.”
